Distinguished Service Award to Jewell Ross Mehus
The quarterly meeting of the White River Valley Historical Society was held at the School of the Ozarks in the Good Memorial Student Union Building on March 13, 1977. At this time a plaque was presented to Mrs. Jewell Ross Mehus in appreciation of her many years of service to the organization.
The plaque reads as follows:
White River Valley Historical Society Distinguished Service Award
Presented to Jewell Ross Mehus
For Dedication to the Preservation Of Ozark Regional History
1977.
Jewell has served the organization as editor of the journal for the past eleven years. During these years she often reminded us, "An editor’s job is just to edit." Jewell did much more than her job as she defined it. She has been a combination of many things including membership recruiter and financial "go-get-er." (She went after money when it failed to come in.) She has always managed to have material to edit, and this has not always been an easy task.
Senator Emory Melton, president of the White River Valley Historical Society, presented the plaque to Mrs. Mehus. At this presentation Jewell said, "Any good which I have done for this historical society goes back to my appreciation of my heritage." She also remarked that Myking (her husband, Dr. O. Myking Mehus) had been a constant help to her. She related that Myking was able to trace his family back for sixteen or seventeen generations in Norway. (Dr. Myking’s enthusiasm and interest has been an inspiration to all of us at W.R.V.H.S.)
Dr. and Mrs. Mehus are charter members of the White River Valley Historical Society. The society is important to them. This is evidenced by the way they work for the group.
