The President's Message
When our most efficient Secretary of the White River Valley Historical Society informed me "as of this date you are President, I have just received the second resignation by letter which now makes the two top offices vacant. The office of President must be filled, and according to Parliamentary law you as the second Vice President move to that office, which is the proper procedure."
The elected president at the Annual Meeting wasn’t able to accept the office, so the Vice President was to take over the office. It was his resignation which propelled me into the office.
The Annual Meeting of June 12. I was elected second Vice President. However, unaware that slated for the office second Vice President, this announcement left me about speechless but I accepted with grace.
The White River Valley Historical Society has a definite challenge to preserve the historical heritage of the brave men and women who moved to the Wilderness, out of which they created a most attractive valley. Thousands come to visit the sunsets, lakes and hills and hundreds stay.
The story must be told and the White River Historical Quarterly is the logical medium. However, there is a need for immediate action. To publish the Quarterly support of the membership fees and an occasional gift is relevant, both renewals and new members are needed. The membership must be doubled.
As these hills are explored for beauty, there is also a gold mine of potential members to be found. If invited to become members and learn the history that the Quarterly unfolds, their addition to the membership would manifestly negate the financing problem. There is a backlog of history to be related to the Editor Mrs. Cinita Brown of Ava points out and urges the members to keep it coming in.
Our inimitable Secretary is constantly asked for more material on certain items, and if the Quarterly is late she is overwhelmed with queries, "Why didn’t I get my Quarterly?"
The White River Valley Historical Society has a potent element for the future because many have decreed it. An answer to the Challenge.
