Forsyth Old Stone Chapel
Researched by Helen and Townsend Godsey

Researchers of historical material often come across items of interest which beg to be brought to light but which do not directly contribute to the specific subject being researched. This was the case recently when Helen and Townsend Godsey were gathering information about the founding of The School of the Ozarks at Forsyth in 1906 and they read about the start of the old Stone Chapel (The Forsyth Presbyterian Church) with pledges of money and work beginning in 1892.

The documents supplied the following information:
Forsyth, Missouri
September 5, 1892

We the undersigned agree and bind ourselves to pay the respective amounts set opposite our names, for the purpose of building a church house in the town of Forsyth, in Taney County, Missouri. Which said church house is to be built of stone and to be a union church. The amounts hereto subscribed to be due and payable on demand whenever the committee demands same.

After a meeting of ten days conducted by Rev. J. W. Roseborough and Mr. W. C. McClure, the Forsyth Presbyterian Church of the Presbytery of Lafayette of the Presbyterian Church of the United States was organized on Friday, August 14, 1896, at Forsyth, Taney County, Missouri.

The church was constituted with the following members:

This listing has been compiled using the original church records and is inserted in the Church Register as a matter of information only. The current chronological roll revised January 1, 1960 should be used for the purpose of reports etc.
