The courthouse yard is the county's civic center of heroism, pride, and remembrance. The yard
pictured here is in the square at Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas. It possesses monuments
commemorating six wars, from the Civil War to Vietnam. It also contains an extraordinary
monument to the county's emigrant sons and daughters of 1857 who, enroute to California, were
slain in a bizarre and infamous massacre in southwest Utah Territory. The granite massacre
monument, some six feet tall, contains a detailed map and is covered with writing, front and back.
