Learning through play is rewarding to children and caregivers alike, especially when you have an opportunity to play together. Playing games can be a great way to have fun and practice developmental skills. During classic games such as “Follow the Leader” or “Red Light, Green Light,” children can practice their gross motor skills to run, walk, hop, skip and even follow single-step directions. Playing “Popcorn” with a parachute and balls helps children learn the power of teamwork. “Simon Says” provides an opportunity to test listening skills and for children to gain confidence by taking on leadership roles. Games like “Duck, Duck, Goose” or “Hot Potato” can help develop self-regulation skills, speed and spatial awareness. Stationary games such as “I Spy” and “Memory” are excellent for developing cognitive skills and patience. These activities can also provide an opportunity to discuss sportsmanship while remembering that we all win when we learn together.
