SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI AND SURROUNDINGS • 1889

Springfield, Missouri, and Surroundings is a 35-page illustrated booklet containing numerous engraved prints of Springfield scenes and notable individuals as they appeared at the time of publication. The narrative offers a promotional view of the community and an optimistic outlook for the future.

There are profiles of business sectors such as agriculture, banking, manufacturing, and retail, as well as individual businesses. Of particular interest are the detailed engravings that are reproduced in the book. This is an important historical record because photographs are not available for most of the views depicted, and many of the buildings no longer exist; so, this collection represents the only surviving visual records prior to 1900.

The web pages generally follow the format of the book, preserving any typographical quirks of the day. Click on individual engravings to see a larger scale version without the text. You can also get an overview of the engravings with links to the larger versions from the engravings thumbnails page. The site is also keyword searchable. Links to these pages can be found at the bottom of every page.

This project is made possible by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Office of the Secretary of State, Missouri State Library and is a reflection of the Library’s commitment to providing primary source material on the internet.
