MoreJoin The Great Backyard Bird Count with The Library
Join community scientists around the world by participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count Feb. 17-20.
Go to birdcount.org/participate for instructions on how to identify and record the birds you see. Then birdwatch for at least 15 minutes one or more times from February 17-20 and share what you see using the Merlin Bird ID app on your smartphone or log your information on the provided form and enter it on www.birdcount.org/ebird-on-computer. Data gathered during the count helps scientists study migration patterns and discover long-term trends. The bird count is hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society and Birds Canada.
Continue bird watching!
Zoo birds join us as part of our celebration of the Great Backyard Bird Count on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-grade 5. Three ambassador birds from Dickerson Park Zoo's Education Department will demonstrate avian characteristics in an up-close and hands-on encounter. Then enjoy bird-themed activities and practice bird counting with a bird scavenger hunt in the library.
The Republic Branch Library's bird feeder station is viewable from inside the branch or north side of the parking lot.
Pick up a bird-themed Library Takeout Kit at the library.
Enjoy a StoryWalk® "Have You Heard the Nesting Bird" by Rita Gray, as you birdwatch at J.R. Martin Park, 300 E. Hines St., Republic. Available February 7-20.
Check out an Adventure Backpack and use the tools to explore the great outdoors. Request one through thelibrary.org/catalog and search "Adventure Backpack." There's one for Birdwatching, too!
