Byron Biggers Band in Concert May 30 at Brentwood Branch Library

The Byron Biggers Band will bring its zany, poetry-infused music to a free, family-friendly concert at 1 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the Brentwood Branch Library, 2214 Brentwood Blvd.

The trio’s performances stem from poems written by young readers’ author and poet Springfieldian David Harrison, set to music by Chris Craig and performed by Harrison, Craig and Gale Clithero.

Craig is associate provost at Missouri State University, and originally suggested setting some of Harrison’s poems music. Clithero is a math teacher at Ozarks Technical Community College and percussionist. Harrison, for whom Harrison Elementary School was named, has won numerous awards for many of his more than 90 books of poetry, fiction and nonfiction for young readers, and educational books for teachers.

“We enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate how poetry and music are so easily connected,” Harrison said.

The trio’s name was inspired by one of the poems the group performs. The three have performed in schools, restaurants, workshops and public radio.
