Children's Author Jan Brett Visits Library Center Dec. 5; Geezerfest Sept. 13 at Library Center

One of the nation’s foremost authors and illustrators of children’s books is Jan Brett. If her name doesn’t ring a bell, maybe her book titles will: “The Mitten,” “The Hat” and “Armadillo Rodeo,” to mention a few. Or just ask a child about “Hedgie,” one of Brett’s beloved forest animals that romp through her stories.

This fall Brett is embarking on a 15-state tour to promote her new book, “The Animals’ Santa,” and the Springfield-Greene County Library District just learned it has won a visit from her for the public on Dec. 5.

It’s a rare treat for Brett fans, who will get to hear her talk from 5-5:20 p.m. at the Library Center about her book, do a drawing demonstration and then be available for photos and book signings. The event is free. Her newest book and some of her most popular ones will be available for purchase, but fans may also bring their own books from home to have her sign them. Other activities are planned that night, too.

Separate from her library visit, Brett is currently conducting a contest on her website only, at janbrett.com, to win a lunch with the author during her visit.

If there are children in the family, including adult children who grew up on Jan Brett’s classic stories and whimsical, woodsy illustrations, they’ll want to save the date to meet the author Dec. 5.

Load up the tailgate with snacks, pack the lawn chairs and blankets. Geezerfest returns at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, on the Library Center patio.

The fall patio concert of 60s, 70s and 80s rock n’ roll by the band Geezer is among the most popular events sponsored by the Friends of the Library. We’ll provide seating on the patio, or you can set up your own chairs on the grass. Tailgating is encouraged! (We’ll move to the auditorium in case of rain.)

Geezer features Richard Struckhoff, Mark Ellman, Mark Pasquale, Duane Lewis, Rusty Swift, Jana Henderson and David Sharon.
