Have you caught the geocache fever? It’s a real-world, outdoor treasure hunt using GPS-enabled devices. Geocachers use a set of GPS coordinates to find the hidden geocache (container).

The Library has a geocache challenge, Passport to Space, for all ages and families from Friday, Oct. 3 through Oct. 10. It’s part of the Library’s observance of World Space Week Saturday through Oct. 10.

Pick up your free Passport to Space at any library branch. Then use your smartphone or GPS to locate space-themed geocaches at libraries and other sites.

We’re also hosting a Skype visit with NASA astronaut Michael Hopkins at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 in the Library Center auditorium. Hopkins, who returned from the International Space Station in March after 166 days, will talk about his mission and answer questions live via the Internet hookup. All ages are welcome.

All events will be at 7 p.m. at the Library Center except the Oct. 14 highlight, when actor Fritz Klein returns as Abraham Lincoln at the Springfield Art Museum.

The series begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 with “The Death Angel Gathers Its Last Harvest: The Battle of Franklin,” presented by Thomas Cartwright, nationally known historian with the Franklin, Tenn., Lotz House.
