How do I leave a legacy?

You want to be remembered, to ensure that your contribution to the world isn't forgotten. But how does one go about leaving their mark on the future? There are many ways to leave a legacy: a writing, a financial gift, or by making a change to society while still alive. These books are just a few that can be found through the Springfield-Greene County Libraries about not only how to leave a legacy, but also about those who left legacies behind.

Nothing left unsaid : creating a healing legacy with final words and letters

Written by: Mary Polce-Lynch

With the last will and testament, our culture has a way to settle estates and material possessions. But we don't have a ritual for bequeathing messages of love, forgiveness, life lessons, hope, and personal legacy. Now, Nothing Left Unsaid is the first-ever nondenominational guide—at once practical and inspiring—that shows how to craft "Final Words," a last communication to leave behind for a spouse, parent, friend, son, daughter, or grandchildren. These final healing words offer our survivors a sense of tangible closure—whether in the event of a sudden death, terminal illness, or the end of a long and well-lived life. Legacy Letters similarly provide a way to express sentiments to loved ones as they approach the end of their lives. Both legacies ensure that nothing is left unsaid.

Legacy : treasures of Black history

Written by: Thomas C. Battle and Donna M. Wells

The Black experience and its impact on our nation's culture and character are illustrated in twelve chapters, from ancient Africa and the slave trade to such key eras as the Civil War, Emancipation, and Reconstruction; the Harlem Renaissance and the Jim Crow Era; and the modern Civil Rights and Black Power/Black Arts movements. The more than 150 historic items showcased here include documents, letters, images, and artifacts, many never before published. Readers will find 18th-century maps of Africa; the pincushion of Elizabeth Keckley, Mrs. Lincoln's seamstress; Depression-era images by Robert M. McNeil; and a Langston Hughes letter in which he first shares his famous poem I, Too, Sing America. Rare photographs include a unique daguerreotype of Frederick Douglass in profile and the Fisk Jubilee Singers, circa 1880. Prominent Black scholars and activists offer expert insights on the collection, on subjects ranging from traditional African societies to 21st-century art and politics.

The legacy : an elder's vision for our sustainable future

Written By:  David T. Suzuki

In this expanded version of an inspiring speech delivered in December 2009, David Suzuki reflects on how we got where we are today and presents his vision for a better future. In his living memory, Suzuki has witnessed cataclysmic changes in society and our relationship with the planet: the doubling of the world’s population, our increased ecological footprint, and massive technological growth. Today we are in a state of crisis, and we must join together to respond to that crisis. If we do so, Suzuki envisions a future in which we understand that we are the Earth and live accordingly. All it takes is imagination and a determination to live within our, and the planet's, means. This book is the culmination of David Suzuki’s amazing life and all of his knowledge, experience, and passion — it is his legacy.
