"Exploring Human Origins" Events Begin in March; Watch "Can You Dig This" March 5

The Library has a rare opportunity to play host to a traveling, Smithsonian Institution in May – “Exploring Human Origins – What Does it Mean To Be Human?” It will fill the Library Center with panels and interactive kiosks and more, exploring the milestones in the evolutionary journey of becoming human.

Scientists from Drury University, Missouri State University and the national experts who helped craft the exhibit will also present a series of programs for a respectful exploration of the science.

The first in the series of programs takes place on Thursday, March 3, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Brentwood Branch Library. It’s a book discussion for adults on “Survival of the Beautiful: Art, Science, and Evolution” by David Rothenberg.

Leading the discussion is Erin Kenny, an associate professor of anthropology and director of the Teaching and Learning Center at Drury. Kenny, who has a doctorate in anthropology/gender studies, is a cultural anthropologist with research interests in household economics, kinship and the family, and more.

Even if you haven’t read the book, you are welcome to attend the event. To learn more about the upcoming exhibit and series, see the Bookends magazine or visit thelibrary.org/exploringhumanorigins.

If you’ve ever doubted that gardening can change lives, a documentary for adults at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Midtown Carnegie Branch may convince you.

"Can You Dig This" is about a gardening revolution taking place in one of the largest food deserts in the country – South Los Angeles. Calling for people to put down their guns and pick up their shovels, these “gangster gardeners” are creating an oasis in the middle of a notoriously dangerous place. It follows the inspirational journeys of four unlikely gardeners discovering what happens when they put their hands in the soil. The film includes adult content, adult language and adult situations.

It might be just the inspiration community gardeners need before picking up seed packets at the Heirloom Seed Library at the Midtown Carnegie Branch or the Library Station. For details call 862-0135.
