Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, Mo., Demonstrates DIY Basics; Historian Hal Funk Talks About Robert Lincoln

You may recall that Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, Mo., partnered with the Library in deconstructing a house and recycling the materials as part of groundwork for the Brentwood Branch renovation. A new partnership offers to teach weekend remodelers how to DIY some basic home projects of their own.

At 6 p.m. today, March 24, in the Library Center Story Hour Room, Habitat will kick off a three-part series, DIY with a Purpose. This session is Tiling Fundamentals. For details, call 882-0714.

At each session, Habitat ’s construction professionals will teach a free class on a home improvement skill. Later in the month, you can go to a Habitat construction site and get hands-on practice under the supervision of Habitat staff while helping a Habitat family. Comfortable with your new skills, you’re ready to DIY at home.

Tiling Fundamentals will cover tools and materials you need to get started, sizing your space, steps to lay the tile properly and examples of the finished product.

Trim Basics for windows, doors and floors will be at 6 p.m. April 14 in the Library Station Story Hour Room. The final session is All About Windows and Doors – taking out and installing them – at 6 p.m. May 5 in the Midtown Carnegie Branch upstairs meeting room.

The question of who has presidential qualities is hotly debated these days. Springfield historian Hal Funk will talk about a man who had them – Robert Lincoln, President Abraham Lincoln’s son. His talk is at 7 p.m. today, March 24, in the Library Center auditorium.

Funk says between 1870 and 1920, this remarkable man became one of the most well-known, influential and wealthy men in America, and a man some historians believe could have been president.
