Hi-M Drive-In

 New Drive-In

Springfield Sunday News & Leader, September 18, 1960, p. B6

"A third Springfield drive-in theater is sprouting up on a 40-acre tract on Highway M, just west of Campbell. The Commonwealth Theaters project is scheduled for completion by early spring, with grading expected to get underway within the next two weeks. Workmen are shown left nailing the first plastic plywood to what will eventually be a curved screen 72 feet wide and 54 feet high, a total of 559,000 square inches of viewing space. The new drive-in will have a capacity of 621 cars, with room for expansion."

The 1960 Springfield telephone directory lists two drive-in theaters, the Springfield Drive-In at 1943 E. Sunshine and the Sunset Drive-In on west Highway 66 [Chestnut]. Southwest Bell Telephone books list a number for Hi-M in the 1985-86 directory but not the following year. A spot check of newspapers in the summer of 1986 does not show any advertising for any drive-in theater. In 1985, an advertisement for the Queen City Twin Drive-in appeared. The ad on the right appears in the July 11, 1984 Springfield Daily News, listing the Queen City Twin at 3630 E. Sunshine, the Holiday Drive-in at 2629 E. Kearney, and the Hi-M at 901 W. Republic. The ariel photograph, left, from around 1971, shows the Hi-M in the upper right hand and the intersection of Highway M and Campbell on the left side.
