Library's Packed Spring Schedule Features Author Visits and More

We’re entering the busiest, most interesting season of the year in the library district. It brings nationally known authors and scholars during the One Read in April, outdoor outings for families and the jam-packed Summer Reading Program for all ages. And that doesn’t begin to cover what’s ahead, so be sure to check in on thelibrary.org/oneread or pick up a Bookends magazine at any branch.

Here are three headline events to put on your calendar:

A Genealogy Symposium is planned 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in the Library Center. Local History and Genealogy Department staff will give five sessions: 9-10 a.m. Researching Your German Ancestors; 10:15-11:30 a.m. Tracing Your World War I Ancestor; 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tracking Ancestors Using Google Earth; 2-3 p.m. Finding Female Ancestors; and 3:30-4:30 p.m. Researching Native American Ancestors.

History fans may recognize the name Dr. Jay Winter, a World War I historian, co-writer and co-producer of the PBS series “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century.” Winter will speak at 6 p.m. April 5 in the Fox Theatre at the History Museum on the Square. His travel schedule limits book sales and signings to 4-5:30 p.m. His talk is “The Revolution of Violence in World War I.” Winter is coming as part of the One Read focus on WWI literature and themes.

Take the kids and grandkids (and their teddy bears!) to Dickerson Park Zoo at 10 a.m. April 1 for a StoryWalk®, when we’ll read “Finding Winnie, The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear" on signposts through the zoo. It’s this year’s One Read title for the whole community to read. Stay for a black bear program and activities by zoo staff until 2 p.m. The zoo will waive admission fee for children ages 3-12 who bring along a teddy bear. Those over age 12 with a teddy bear admitted for $6, half the regular admission. The event is cosponsored by the Dickerson Park Zoo.
