Add Some Nonfiction to Your Summer Reading with New Titles Hitting Shelves in July
What’s with those pencils and backpacks already creeping onto store shelves? There’s a lot of summer – and summer reading – ahead of us, with some new nonfiction titles hitting the Springfield-Greene County Library shelves in July. You can place an early hold at thelibrary.org/catalog.
Here’s a sample:
- “Caesar’s Last Breath: Decoding the Secrets of the Air Around Us.” Sam Kean explores the topic of air, gases and the history and trivia surrounding it, including his premise that there is a strong likelihood that everyone living now is inhaling traces of Caesar’s last breath.
- “Everything All at Once: How to Unleash Your Inner Nerd, Tap Into Radical Curiosity and Solve any Problem” is part memoir, part science, part political book by Bill Nye, the Science Guy.
- “I Need a Lifeguard Everywhere But the Pool” is a new humorous collection of stories by Lisa Scottoline (usually a mystery writer) and her daughter Francesca Serritella.
- “Reading with Patrick: A Teacher, a Student and a Life-Changing Friendship.” While teaching English as a Teach for America volunteer in Arkansas, writer Michelle Kuo befriended one of her students, Patrick Browning. Kuo went on to law school and after completing her degree, learned that Patrick was in jail for murder. Kuo returned to Helena, Arkansas, to continue reading and discussing literature with him while he was in jail.
- “Woolly: The True Story of the Quest to Revive One of History’s Most Iconic Extinct Creatures.” Author Ben Mezrich explains how a team of scientists led by geneticist Dr. George Church is working on resurrecting the prehistoric woolly mammoth. They hope to sequence the DNA of woolly mammoths found frozen in the Arctic and splice elements of that sequence into the DNA of a modern Asian elephant.

If you’re up for a slice of travel with your summer reading, visit the Library Center auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 20, for an Ozarks Travelogue. Jennifer Johnson, environmental scientist and Ozarks Conservation Program coordinator for the Missouri Sierra Club, will share stories of hiking and kayaking adventures in the Ozarks as inspiration for your own "microadventures".
