There are many steps involved in starting a nonprofit organization. To make this undertaking easier, The University of Missouri Extension has created a resource guide to assist you in the planning and decision making process.
Their free online guide "Creating a 501(c)(3) Foundation Resource Guide” by Stephen Jeanetta, published by Associated Electric Cooperatives, is a workbook written to take the reader step-by-step through the incorporation process. The guide covers all that you need to know including a listing of forms and where to get them.
The Internal Revenue Service has an abundance of resources on their website Tax Information for Charities and Nonprofits. This will enable you to stay on top of the many issues involved with your nonprofit status. Also, in keeping with their mission the IRS office of Exempt Organizations has created a wonderful free online series entitled "How to Stay Exempt" that can help your tax-exempt organization maintain its exempt status and meet its continuing filing requirements.
