Love Ozarks Folklore? Check Out These Programs Oct. 11-15!

Fans of Ozarks culture – the folksy part and the outrageous – have some fun program choices this week.

Head to the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, for Ozarks Fairy & Folk Tales, a multimedia presentation about the lore and legends, from mysterious monsters to strange customs and characters.

Local artists Sandi Green-Baker and Andrew and Re Baker-Dietz, and filmmakers Paul Simmons and Nikki Richardson Simmons of Mood Ring Films, will share a multimedia evening of storytelling featuring folk songs, short films and crankies – a century-old storytelling tradition using music, theatrics and art.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, Ozarks Alive’s Kaitlyn McConnell will present Folklore (and More) in the Ozarks. She’ll talk about the folk traditions, music, stories and superstitions, past and present, that helped define the region. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Both programs are part of the Library’s Oh, The Horror series in October and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Two national authors and the classic “Young Frankenstein” film are next. See thelibrary.org/ohthehorror or Bookends for the schedule.

Here’s an Ozarks legend that’s totally factual: the story of the Young Brothers Massacre of Jan. 2, 1932.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in the Republic Branch Library, author and storyteller Tim Ritter will tell the story of when 10 lawmen and one civilian headed to a Springfield farmhouse to arrest two brothers, known to be small-time car thieves and one suspected of murder. Within 45 minutes of their arrival, six officers were dead, with an enraged community asking why.  Books will be available for purchase and signing.
