Auto racing
Ozarks racing fans were treated to a thrilling battle for the 1976 Missouri State Asphalt Championship at the Fairgrounds Speedway on August 29. Dave Watson, #73 and Springfield's Larry Phillips, #75, traded the lead three times in the early going of the 100 lap feature. Much of the drama however, ended on lap 45 when Phillips lost a right rear wheel and Watson drove away to victory. The sequence of events was captured by track photographer Dennis Slane, whose collection is available on the library's site The Fairgrounds and Beyond: Auto Racing in the Ozarks.
