Anxious to Wed
“George Hannan [sic], late of Aurora, now a laborer of Springfield, wanted to celebrate the New Year by taking unto himself a wife. His betrothed, Miss Ida Alexander, of Aurora, had not arrived in town to meet her lover, but young Hannan thought that he would get the license and be prepared for the ceremony. But the Recorder did not like the aspect of things when the young man asked for the legal permit to wed. The disappointed applicant left the office in sorrow, soon returning with a witness, one Henry Allhand, a lad of eighteen years, who said he knew Miss Alexander to be of lawful conjugal age. This did not satisfy the officers, and the Recorder asked the candidate for matrimony to procure the consent of the girl’s father by telegraph. Mr. Hannan did not take kindly to the suggestion, however, and again went out to hunt a more mature witness. Finally Edward Adams was found, who could swear that the young lady was over eighteen years old. Each of the trio was then sworn to as to the truth of this statement and the Recorder issued the license.” Democrat January 2, 1892
According to Greene County Missouri Marriages 1891-1893 copied by the Ozarks Genealogical Society, a license was issued to George H. Haun, and Miss Ida Alexander of Aurora, Lawrence Co. MO, January 4, 1892. It was issued by Wm. E. Sheffield, J.P. [Justice of the Peace] in Campbell Township.
