Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation Awards $6,000 Grant to Library Foundation
The public will have access to more timely and reliable health information through the Springfield-Greene County Libraries, thanks to a recent $6,000 grant from the Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation. This is the first time the medical foundation has awarded a grant to the Library Foundation.
Library staff will use the grant to purchase new health resources and coordinate existing ones in the community. Among other things, the library will buy consumer health books; develop new training for consumers seeking health information, and conduct outreach with library materials to health care providers, patient support groups and other community resources.
"The Library Foundation is excited to partner with the Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation to expand the consumer health resources and research support available at the Springfield-Greene County Libraries,” said Library Foundation Director Michelle Creed.
“We rely on community partners like the Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation to support special projects like this that wouldn't be possible with ordinary income alone,” she added.
“Learning of a new diagnosis can be a scary and confusing time,” Creed said. “The Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation recognizes the critical role of the Springfield-Greene County Library in helping people find the timely and reliable information they need to make informed health care decisions and live healthier lives.”
Dr. Jim Waterfield was among the medical foundation’s selection committee members.
“We know that people go to libraries seeking medical information, and we think it’s important they are directed to reliable sources of valuable information,” Waterfield said. “We envision the library as a source available to everybody, where they could get good information and be directed to further places in the community.”
The Library Foundation promotes charitable giving in support of a strong and innovative Springfield-Greene County Library District. Since its founding in 1993, the Library Foundation has generated more than $1.25 million in charitable support for Library programs, services and facilities. The Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, uses grants to promote education and research in medicine and the ancillary professions in the Ozarks. Since 1997, these donor-advised funds have granted more than $1.1 million back to the community.
