“The Border Between Them” Book Talk features author Jeremy Neely and Civil War Panel March 5

March 1, 2012 — Jeremy Neely will discuss his book, “The Border Between Them: Violence and Reconciliation on the Kansas-Missouri Line,” at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 5, at Meyer Library Room 101 on the Missouri State University campus. Free parking will be available in lots 19, 4, and 20.

From 1856 to 1865, a bitter guerrilla conflict raged along the Kansas-Missouri border, the first battleground in the struggle over slavery and the most savage theater of the Civil War.

Neely, with the MSU History Department and a scholar of that violent conflict, offers his insights into its origins, meanings and consequences. His focus goes beyond famous individuals such as John Brown and William Clarke Quantrill to include the stories of everyday people.

Stay for a panel discussion about the Civil War west of the Mississippi by Neely and William Piston, MSU; and Michael Price and John Rutherford, historians with the Springfield-Greene County Library District.

This program is part of the Springfield-Greene County Libraries’ “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War” series presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.
