Springfield’s Urban Histories: A Community’s Unexplored Past’ July 26 at Library Center

July 14, 2014 — Learn about Springfield's lesser-known history during Springfield’s Urban Histories: A Community’s Unexplored Past from 8:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, in the Library Center auditorium, 4653 S. Campbell Ave.

Historians will discuss their recent research into unexplored aspects of Springfield’s History published by Moon City Press in "Springfield’s Urban Histories: Essays on the Queen City of the Missouri Ozarks." The book will be on sale. The event schedule is:

  • 8:30-9 a.m. Book Sale
  • 9-10 a.m. "Uncovering Springfield’s Hidden Histories: The Queen City’s Unexplored Past," Stephen McIntyre, professor of history, Missouri State University
  • 10:15-11:15 a.m. “Quinine and Courage: The Battle of Springfield, January 8, 1863," William Garret Piston, professor of history, Missouri State University, and John C. Rutherford, local history associate, Springfield-Greene County Library District
  • 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Lunch Break/Book Sale
  • 12:15-1:15 p.m. "Retail Rivals: Commercial Street Versus the Public Square, 1870-1945." Angela Wingo Miller, department chair, teacher education, Ozarks Technical Community College
  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. "Unrestricted Warfare: The 1916-17 Springfield Streetcar Strike," Erin Smither, instructor, Missouri State University and reference librarian, Springfield-Greene County Library
  • 2:45-3:45 p.m. "Considerable Bad Feeling in this City:" The 1922 Frisco Shopmen’s Strike," Stephen McIntyre, professor of history, Missouri State University
