Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale Proceeds Hit $110,786.23

October 30, 2014 — The Friends of the Springfield-Greene County Library District took in $110,786.23 in sales of used books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and games at its 2014 Fall Book Sale Oct. 21-26 at Remington’s.

The sale event kicked off on Oct. 20 with the Friends Night Preview Sale, a three-hour shopping blitz for Friends members and those wishing to join that night for $5.

Proceeds from this and other semi-annual Friends sales benefit the10 branches of the Library and the Mobile Library, providing books for preschoolers, author visits and music concerts, special program series and capital improvements. The Friends also funded the Mobile Library and pledged $300,000 toward the Brentwood Branch renovation.

“I continue to be amazed that the Friends continue to sell over $100,000 at their spring and fall book sales!" said Library District Executive Director Regina Greer Cooper. “The Library will definitely have good uses for the funds that they are able to supply us based on their sales.”

Since 1984, the all-volunteer Friends group has conducted sales of books and other items donated through the year by private individuals and retail stores. The Library also donates excess or older items periodically weeded from the district’s collections. The Friends conduct a fall and spring sale. The sales record, set in fall 2012, was $125,779.01.

The $110, 786.23 is something to celebrate, said Friends President Jim Moore, who chaired his first sales this year.

“I felt it was very successful, and I appreciate all the people who came out and bought books to help us fund things that the Library can’t fund with its tax base. I also appreciate all the hard work that everybody in the Friends put in, and we look forward to the spring sale April 21-26 (2015). We’ll be ready to do it again!”

If you missed the sale, check out the Friends used books sold every day at the Between Friends Gift Shops at the Library Center and Library Station.
