Author Lois Lowry Kicks Off One Read with Visit to Springfield

April 2, 2015 — Dystopian literature and movies are popular with all ages of readers, and the author of one of the most enduring titles, “The Giver,” will give a talk tonight in Springfield.

Author Lois Lowry, who is equally popular for her children’s and young adult books, will talk about her books and writing from 7-9:30 p.m. today, April 2, in the Springfield Art Museum auditorium, 1111 E. Brookside Drive. All ages are invited to this free event. The author will also sign her books, available for purchase that night.

Lowry’s visit is sponsored by the Springfield-Greene County Library District, which is featuring “The Giver” and Lowry during its April One Read. Funding is through the Friends of the Library and The Library Foundation. The library’s annual one book, one community celebration encourages everyone to read the same book, talk about it with friends and family, and attend related programs sponsored by the library district.

Before Lowry’s talk, a troupe from the Springfield Little Theatre Education Series, under the direction of Rachel Jamieson, will present scenes from their production of "The Giver." The book was also released in 2014 as a major motion picture starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites.

Lois Lowry is one of the world’s most beloved and versatile authors for children and young adults. She has written more than 40 books including the popular, lighthearted Anastasia Krupnik series. She has sold millions of books worldwide and twice received the prestigious Newbery Medal for her WWII story “Number the Stars” and “The Giver.”

The library’s other One Read events through April 16 focus on “The Giver” themes of the importance of memory, with a family scrapbooking event, a talk on how to preserve family memories and more.

On April 14, two best-selling young adult fiction writers – Ellen Hopkins and Chris Crutcher, will also share the stage at 7 p.m. at the Library Center. All ages are welcome.
