E-books and Comics Now Available on Hoopla

June 11, 2015 — Since the Library District launched hoopla less than two years ago, patrons and staff have enjoyed how easy it is to access audiobooks, video and music online. (It’s at thelibrary.org/digital.)

One thing they kept saying was “I wish they would do e-books, too…” says Renee Brumett, electronic resources librarian. “So, we asked. And hoopla answered.”
Hoopla just added 6,500 e-books and 500 comic books on the hoopla digital site.

“There's a little bit of everything, and I think some things will be super popular,” Renee says, adding, “The comics are pretty cool.”

E-book titles include biographies, sports nonfiction, Christian fiction, urban fiction, children’s books, health, fitness and nutrition titles and popular fiction. The comics range from Peanuts and My Little Pony to The Storyteller Witches, Escape from New York and Planet of the Apes. Scroll through all of the e-books and comics by going to thelibrary.org/digital, and click on hoopla.

The e-books work much the same way as everything else – available all the time and no holds necessary – content is always available, Renee says. And the e-books check out for three weeks, then disappear from your device. No fines!

“If you're using an e-book in the browser of your desktop or laptop, once you borrow an item, a reader will open up in a new screen,” Renee explains. “If you're using the app on a smartphone or tablet, the reader resides within the app so you won't have to do anything special.”

For Android devices, as soon as you checkout the title, it will begin to download to the reader, she explains. For iOS (Apple) devices, you'll borrow an item and then click "Read" to begin the download.

“The reader is different than for the e-book,” Renee says. “You should definitely check one out to see. The reader lets you zoom in and go frame by frame or see the whole ‘page.’”

Hoopla is also a favorite for audiobooks, music, movies and TV shows, and you can access them from the same site.
