Young Reader Donates Lemonade Stand Money to ReNew Brentwood; See Alexander Hamilton Exhibit Aug. 8-Sept. 4

August 4, 2016 — It took an 8-year-old last week to tell the best story about the value of a library. Maybe you caught her on the TV news or in the News-Leader.

Nora Miller is a voracious reader, and she loves the Brentwood Branch Library. She remembers “as a child” going to storytime, and it being her favorite place to go. When the branch closed in April for renovation, Nora’s family visited the temporary branch in the Brentwood Center across from Battlefield Mall. One day recently, she dropped some change in a donation box there to help finish the ReNew Brentwood Capital Campaign. We’re about $27,000 shy of the $2.5 million goal.

Then, Nora decided to help raise money for Brentwood on her own. With help from her mom, Stacy Jurado-Miller, they mixed vats of lemonade, baked cookies and enlisted the help of neighborhood pals to do the same.

From 4-6 p.m. July 27, Nora and her friends set up a shaded lemonade stand, waved posters “Buy for Brentwood,” provided drive-up curb service and flagged down dog walkers. When it was over, they had raised $165 for the ReNew Brentwood campaign.
Even better, Nora inspired several others to match her donation.

When we told Nora that her beloved Brentwood Branch would reopen in December, she beamed. That’s her birthday month, she said. “That will be a great birthday present.” We think so too, Nora.

Don’t forget – Hamilton is coming to the Library Center on Monday, Aug. 8, and he’s not the song-and-dance one from Broadway.

You will learn more layers of the man in this multi-panel exhibit, “Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America.” It will be in the concourse through Sept. 4. Each panel unveils layer after layer of the man whose vision for our financial, social, foreign policy and legal systems during the Founding period of our country was so far ahead of its time that it took the nation decades to catch up with them.
