Make Baskets, Bookshelf Bling and More at Adult Crafting Classes

April 21, 2023 — Adults never lose their love of crafting, and The Library has a great lineup for adults to learn a new hobby or practice an old one. Check out these easy, one- to two-hour sessions for everything from fiber arts to laser engraving, newspaper basket making to whimsical bookshelf décor. Crafters can also take more classes at their leisure, online, at Creativebug. Sign on for free with your library card at thelibrary.org/creativebug.

  • Craft & Tell. Saturday, May 6, 10:30 a.m. in the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch   community room. Spend an hour working on a craft project you're in the middle of, or begin something new while chatting with fellow crafters. If you enjoy the fiber arts, needlework, drawing, or any other craft that is portable, quiet and doesn’t make a mess, this group is for you!
  • Flying Needles. Tuesday, May 9, 1:30 p.m., Ash Grove Branch community room. Bring your knitting and crochet projects and join other fiber artists on the second Tuesday of every month. Work on your current projects, share patterns and ideas, and check out our knitting and crochet resources. All levels of experience are welcome.
  • Introduction to Laser Engraving: Acrylic Plant Stakes. Tuesday, May 9, 2-4 p.m. in the Midtown Carnegie Branch Maker Space. Learn to use the laser engraver software to create your own custom acrylic plant stakes. Library staff will teach you how to design and print using the Glowforge Laser Engraver. Materials will be provided. Registration starts April 24; call 417-837-5011.
  • Paper Flower Shadow Box. Thursday, May 11, 6-8 p.m. in the Library Center meeting room A. Learn how to decorate a shadow box with 3D paper flowers. Materials will be provided. Registration starts April 27; call 417-883-5341.
  • Introduction to Cricut: Vinyl Stickers. Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m.-noon for grade 6-adult in the Midtown Carnegie Branch Maker Space. Use the Cricut Design Space to create and make a sticker that you can place on your car, laptop or tumbler. Library staff will teach you how to create or upload your very own design to make a unique sticker. Materials will be provided. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration starts May 8; call 417-837-5011.
  • Newspaper Basket Making. Saturday, May 20, 1-3 p.m. in the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch community room. Learn how to turn old newspapers into new baskets at this upcycling craft program. Once you learn the technique, take the knowledge home and experiment with different shapes, sizes and colors. Materials will be provided. Registration starts May 6; call 417-883-1974.
  • Bookshelf Fairy Houses. Saturday, May 27, 2-3:30 p.m. in the Library Station Frisco Room. Bring some whimsy to your bookshelf with a handmade fairy house. Materials will be provided. Registration starts May 13; call 417-616-0683.
