HEALTH/MEDICAL INFORMATION POLICY
All information accessible from the Springfield Greene County Library is intended for general public and educational use only. Access to the Library should not be regarded or taken as medical advice that would be provided by a physician or other certified medical professional to his or her client.
Library staff does not provide medical or health advice or opinions regarding the patron's condition. Individuals who require medical or health advice should contact their physician or other certified medical professional. Assistance locating a physician, dentist, or other medical professional is available from professional organizations. Library staff can assist in locating these professional organizations.
The unauthorized practice of medicine is prohibited in Missouri (Missouri Revised Statutes 334.010). Library staff is not qualified to explain or interpret the content of medical or health reference sources. Staff are not allowed to offer personal opinions on medical conditions or diagnosing a medical condition. Staff are also not allowed to give personal recommendations for alternative therapies, procedures for treating an illness, or censor materials available for the patron. Staff may not make recommendations to doctors or other medical care providers but may provide access to other information that may help the user identify and locate those resources.
Staff will explain the mechanics of using the materials, how to locate information using subjects, indexes and tables of contents.
