The 1953 Labor Day Parade featured an estimated 1,000 people including the Meat Cutters No. 536, the Women's International Union Label League and the American Federation of Grain Millers.

Rountree House
The Springfield Fire Department burned down the one-hundred-year-old Rountree Home as a training exercise. This cleared the future building site for Springfield's first public housing project.
