What Did They Mean By That?
In a recent column on the Broomfield Enterprise website, columnist Julie Miller wrote about the importance of using dictionaries and other reference works when extracting information from historic documents. In her article " Right dictionaries key to understanding what you find," Julie gave examples of some useful dictionaries.
Terminology becomes even more important when genealogists are translating documents from one language to another. A period dictionary which includes all of the foreign words needed to translate a document may be difficult to locate. There are, however, websites such as Family Search, which include research articles and genealogy word lists.
The first page of the Dutch genealogy word list includes links to the Latin and French word lists. All three languages might be needed depending on the era in which research is conducted.
