Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale Begins Wednesday; Preview Sale Tuesday Evening

Sci-fi fans, romance lovers, travel bums and people who can’t get enough cookbooks – there are six tractor-trailers filled with your favorite things and headed for the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale April 26.

You’ll find the same rock-bottom prices on paperbacks, hardbacks and like-new best-sellers. Adult, young adult and children’s books and most audiovisuals are $1 or less; better books are $2 and up.

The bargain-shopping extravaganza runs from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday, April  26-Saturday, April 29 (Half-Price Day); and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 30 ($1 and $5 Bag Day), in the E*Plex at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, 3001 N. Grant Ave. Parking and admission is free. Cash or checks accepted.

Friends Night Preview Sale is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 25. Friends members admitted free, or pay $5 at the door to shop and join that night. (That also gets you into Friends Night free in October!)

Every sale brings a variety of the expected and unexpected donations from the public, this one included. This year we received a working, portable 8-track player with tapes; and collectibles including “Current Cattle Brands in the State of Missouri.”  The sale also includes a large collection of software and video games.

There are passenger lists from early voyages to the United States, census records and family genealogy books. Shoppers will also find 50 $1 books by recent Library Center guest speaker and children’s author Kevin Henkes, including his popular “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse.”

The craft section is always large, says Friends President Carol Grimes, and this year includes a bounty of knitting and gardening books. There are lots of puzzles and games in the better books section.

The paperback section has a new military category, and a large collection of Western paperbacks and books by popular political writers.

Proceeds from the Friends sales fund programs and entertainment at the library branches, sponsor major author events and pay for many updates and improvements at the 10 library branches of the Springfield-Greene County Library District.
