Coming Up Sept. 5-10: Beginning Genealogy, Fix-it Fair, Bridge Lessons, Fall GeezerFest and Sunday Concert

This week’s library programs are all about your favorite pursuits, from genealogy, to live music; from bridge to DIY projects.

Cheek swabs may tell you about your ancestors, and if you want to explore further, you can start with Beginning Genealogy from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch. For more information on this free program call 883-1974.

The Library also offers Ancestry.com for in-library use, HeritageQuest Online (with new content and the added ability to send records home); and others to help your research.

DIYers can get help fixing their broken you-name-its at our third Fix-it Fair from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Midtown Carnegie Branch. Volunteer experts from the Queen City Beard and Moustache Federation will help you fix your ailing household appliances, bikes, clothing, lawn mowers and more. We suggest you call 862-0135 ahead to make sure we can match a fixer with your item. The presenter is Community Partnership of the Ozarks Tool Library.

Thursday also kicks off the return of the popular, four-week series Introduction to Contract Bridge from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch. It will continue every Thursday through September.

The Bridge Center members will lead the sessions for beginners and anyone interested in improving their game. The lessons work: Most of the participants in the previous series are still taking classes and playing today, says Bridge Center’s Connie White, and returnees are welcome to this series. For details or to register call 883-1974.

Finally, it’s the concert that we anticipate all summer: Fall Geezerfest, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, on the Library Center patio (inside if it rains.) This has become a huge friends and family event with lawn chairs, blankets and snacks while local cover band Geezer rocks the Library Center. There’s dancing, singing, stargazing and reminiscing to great tunes from the 60s-90s eras.

The Friends of the Library generously sponsor this and the indoor concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, in the Library Center featuring Americana/folk group Techs & the Roadies.
