Coming Up at The Library: "An Ozarks Travelogue," Honoring the Legacy of World War I and Giving Tuesday

It seems no matter how long we live in the Ozarks, there’s always something new – or old – to uncover. Video journalist Ed Fillmer will reveal hidden secrets on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium with “An Ozarks Travelogue.”

You’ll learn about an elephant refuge in Arkansas, the white squirrels of Marionville, a quilting bee in Ava, and the women, old and young, who carry on this time honored tradition, and other tales from Fillmer's archive of some 1,500 stories about life in the Ozarks from his four decades as a video journalist.

The World War I tribute series concludes this week with three programs in the Library Center auditorium.

Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., Local History Associate Michael Price will discuss how Springfield residents supported the war effort.

Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., Todd Wilkinson, public affairs officer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, discusses the Coast Guard's dual mission in the Great War.

On Saturday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m., we’ll hear about the Path to War: The Road to U.S. Entry into the First World War, 1914-1917. Michael Neiberg, chair of War Studies and professor of history in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College, discusses the lengthy debate that shaped American sentiment before entering the war.

The Library works to stretch dollars as far as possible, and still it has $200,000 less this year to purchase new items for the collection that you can borrow.

So The Library Foundation is hosting a campaign – $25 for 25 – to fill the gaps in honor of the foundation’s 25th year. We’re kicking it off on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 27, but you can give us a head start by donating now.

What can $25 buy? A best-seller novel; a new movie release on DVD; your favorite music on CD; or three board books for our youngest readers.

You can donate online at yourlibraryfoundation.org/ or mail a check to The Library Foundation, 4653 S. Campbell Ave., Springfield, MO 65810.
