Celebrate The '80s and Swap Seeds Jan. 26

Big hair. Aerobics videos. Shoulder pads. They are unmistakably “The ’80s.” And if you liked that decade’s music, fashions, TV or games, you can relive it all on ’80s Day on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Library Station. (You can come even if you weren’t around for the ’80s.)

The festivities begin with Saturday Morning Cartoons for adults from 10 a.m.-noon in the Santa Fe Room. Watch the cartoons you grew up with and eat some of your favorite childhood breakfast cereals.

From 1-5 p.m. in the Frisco Room, it’s ’80s-themed games, music and activities. At 2 p.m., adults and teens in grades 6-12 can compete in a Name That Tune challenge. Then break out the big hair, shoulder pads and leg warmers for an all-ages costume contest at 3:30 p.m. in the lobby.

Families with children of all ages are invited to Disney’s ’80s classic “The Little Mermaid” sing-along from 2-3:30 p.m. in the Story Hour Room. Enjoy snacks, and feel free to wear costumes.

Golden Girls TV show fans can gather teams of four to compete in a trivia contest based on “The Golden Girls” from 6-8 p.m. in the Frisco Room. Call 616-0683 to register.

Finally, “Ready Player One” will be on the big screen from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Santa Fe Room for ages 13 and older. Popcorn provided. For details on any of the events, call 865-1340.

If gardening is your passion, instead, drop by the Midtown Carnegie Branch upstairs meeting room from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, for National Seed Swap Day. If you don’t have seeds to swap, come anyway because we have lots to share. Otherwise, bring your seeds to swap with other gardeners.

You can also pick up helpful information from the University of Missouri Extension, Springfield Community Gardens and Community Partnership of the Ozarks Tool Library. Kids can stop by the Teen Department to make a garden craft; materials will be provided. For details call 862-0135.

Later, you can round out your future garden with heirloom seeds when the Heirloom Seed Library reopens March 1 at the Library Station and Midtown Carnegie Branch.
