We Believe in Rewarding Adult Summer Readers, Too! Learn How We Do It.

More than 5,000 children and teens have already completed the first challenge of the library’s Summer Reading Program that runs May 17-Aug. 3, and more are working on it. That earns them some nifty rewards – a book; a “passport” to free treats at area businesses; a fine waiver card and chances to read and win more prizes.

The extra benefit: Good reading habits through August can prevent the dreaded “summer slide” and better prepare them for school in the fall.

Adults like incentives and prizes, too, right? And we’re delivering.

Adults age 18 and older can register for the free program at thelibrary.org/universe, or with a paper form at any branch and Mobile Library. Log your first books and get a sturdy library book bag. Each book you log or activity you complete (options included with your registration) will earn more entries into an Aug. 10 drawing for gift sets for coffee lovers, movie fans and book lovers.

One way to enjoy summer reading even more is to share what you’re reading with one of the library-sponsored book discussion groups.  You can find the list of groups, meeting dates and what they’re reading at thelibrary.org/bookdiscussions, or get a brochure at your neighborhood branch. Most libraries host daytime or evening groups on general topics or specific genres.

Crime, you say? The My Favorite Crime Book Club for age 21 and older meets Wednesday, July 10, 7:30 p.m. at Tie & Timber Beer Co. Is horror your guilty pleasure? Visit Donuts & Death, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at Hurts Donut Co. on Park Central West.

For American culture, it’s Books & Brew for age 21 and older at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at Mother’s Brewing Co. The Civil War Book Discussion Group meets at 6 p.m. Monday, July 22, in the Library Center auditorium. Two groups for senior adults meet at the Northview Center 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 14; and South Side Senior Center at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20.

Don’t feel like getting out? You can still read with others at our virtual club, ReadUps at facebook.com/groups/ReadUps, or on the library’s Facebook page under Groups, and click GoodReads.

     Happy reading!
