Consider The Library Your Business Dream Factory

Librarians aren’t business owners, but they sure know how to help if you have an idea for one, need money for one, or want to take one to the next level.

“We’re a great place to start the journey,” says library Associate Director Jim Schmidt.

The “Business” bar on thelibrary.org/research offers links to robust demographic and market research, business startup help and professional resources. Librarians can help direct you to the right sources. A team also meets regularly with local entrepreneurs and small business owners, and they’ve developed partnerships with reliable resources for referrals and free workshops.

One example is a free program from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in Library Center meeting room A, sponsored by SCORE. It’s Overcoming the Fear of Writing a Business Plan with Business Model Canvas.

SCORE mentor John Fleming will explain the Business Model Canvas, a one-page document that allows you to test and validate the key parts of your business in a manageable format. The method helps you find problems early, organize your enterprise and ensure that you are delivering value to your customer. Fleming will provide tips on how to use the document to develop a full business plan. Networking begins at 5:30 p.m. To register call 417-986-4730.

Registration is also underway for an Aug. 22 conference the library is cosponsoring with several partners. The 2019 SCORE E3 Women’s Conference: Educating & Empowering Entrepreneurs will be at the Doubletree Convention Center, 2431 N. Glenstone Ave.

Experts in business development, financing and marketing will provide sessions for business startups, companies experiencing new growth, and businesses in a transitional phase.

A reception is planned 4-7 p.m. Aug. 21 at the eFactory, 405 N. Jefferson Ave. The all-day conference begins at 8 a.m. Aug. 22 at the Doubletree, with networking, exhibitors, panels and breakout sessions.

Keynote is “Lessons Learned From Growing from 2 to 80 employees” by Kelsey Raymond, co-founder and CEO of Influence & Co., a content marketing agency in St. Louis, Kansas City and Columbia, and a Forbes 30 Under 30.

Registration fee is $85, or $65 for students. Register at swmissouri.score.org/E3, or contact mary.overbey@scorevolunteer.org or 417-501-0324.
