There's a lot to Look Forward to in 2020 at Your Library
The year 2019 brought major events for library visitors: a 24-hour library kiosk; “Circe” author Madeline Miller and MSU’s Brooks Blevins; Fix-it Fairs, a How-To Festival, Friends Book Sales and LibraryCon.
What’s next? Here’s a look ahead to the first half of 2020. Make plans to join us!
- Uplifting Lit. A new book group promises to put the happy in your day with Feel-Good Fiction. It launches on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Library Center Harrison Room, with “The Keeper of Lost Things” by Ruth Hogan.
- iPhone for Seniors! The popular series continues Jan. 14, 1-3 p.m., and will meet monthly on Tuesdays through spring at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch.
- Dig in! The Heirloom Seed Library opens Feb. 29 at the Library Station and Midtown Carnegie Branch. Check out herb, vegetable and flower seeds.
- You Count. Be Counted. During Census 2020, all library branches will provide free computer guest passes so those who prefer can complete their Census form online.
- How-To: Earth Edition. Explore 25 presentations on creating a sustainable future on Earth – from chickens to native plants to composting – March 28 at the Library Center.
- Let the rumpus start! April 25-May 31: 50 Years of Maurice Sendak: Where the Wild Things Are. This exhibition showcases 50 works by beloved children’s book author/illustrator Maurice Sendak. Programs and children’s activities included.
- Book it! The big Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale is April 29-May 3 at the E*Plex, Ozark Empire Fairgrounds. Friends Night Preview Sale is April 28.
- David Sedaris Live! May 1: The Friends of the Library and the Library will present humor author David Sedaris live at the Historic Gillioz Theatre. All tickets are free and reserved; tickets available beginning 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, through the Gillioz Theatre website, gillioztheatre.com/events.
- Are We Alone? Discover Exoplanets: The Search For Alien Earths is an interactive, all-ages exhibit and programs planned May 8-July 25 at the Library Station and Discovery Center of Springfield.
- Get Your Read On. Summer Reading Program for tots, kids, teens and adults begins May 15 with sweet rewards.
- Grandkids’ delight: A Play and Learn Center, with interactive, imaginative learning kiosks for children is planned in 2020 at the Library Station.
