Talk to Authors Tae Keller and David Harrison in These June Virtual Visits!

Newbery Award 2021 winner Tae Keller and internationally published Springfield-based author and poet David L. Harrison will visit virtually to talk about poetry, writing and talk directly with participants.

David Harrison is published internationally and in 13 languages, and we’re lucky to call him Springfield’s own. Harrison will give a two-part virtual poetry workshop, “It Starts with a Sound” at 10 a.m.  Wednesday and Thursday, June 2 and 3, for grades 2-5.

On Wednesday, kids will learn the art of writing poetry, starting with a single sound, and write their own poem at home. They’ll return to share it on Thursday.

David is celebrating the 52nd anniversary of his first published book – “The Boy with a Drum,” in 1969, which has sold over two million copies. The first of his many awards was the 1972 Christopher Award for “The Book of Giant Stories.” Since then David has published 101 original titles that have sold millions of copies. His newest book for young readers is “The Dirt Book.”

Register once for both sessions by visiting thelibrary.org/programs, and a link to the virtual event will be shared with registered participants. Registration starts May 19.

Only one children’s author receives the Newbery Award each year, and the 2021 winner is visiting The Library, virtually, this summer!

Don’t miss “Tae Talk: A Conversation with Newbery Award Winner Tae Keller” at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12. It’s a perfect author event for grades 3 through adult.

Tae Keller, who wrote “When You Trap a Tiger,” will talk about where she gets her ideas, what it’s like to be an author and finding your voice as a writer. Her debut book, "The Science of Breakable Things," was a 2020-2021 Mark Twain Award Nominee.

The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. It is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

Register by visiting thelibrary/programs; a link to the virtual event will be shared with registered participants. Registration starts June 1.
