Seed Your Healthy Life with a Gardening Series

Whether you want to help our pollinators with a native plant garden, or looking for the best seeds to plant for eating healthy, there’s a program at The Library to get you there. May programs are part of an entire series, with The Heirloom Seed Library, that stretches through fall.

Here are the May events:

Native Plants as Part of a Healthy Yard, Tuesday, May 3, 6 p.m. for adults in the Library Station Frisco Room. Caleb Sanders, director of the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks Conservation Corps, will share his experience converting his lawn to native plants. Clarissa Hatley, education outreach specialist with the City of Springfield's Yard Ethic program, will talk about this community-wide effort for yard care that supports people, plants and wildlife, and the services it provides. A #PlantWildflowers program.

Preparing to Plant, Saturday, May 14, 1-3 p.m. for adults in the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library upstairs meeting room. Seeds provide nutrients for both plants and people. Examine different kinds of seeds and learn about the benefits of the parts of plants we do eat – our fruits and vegetables. Presented by Sherri Hull, nutrition educator with the Greene County MU Extension Office. Fresh produce samples at these programs provided by Springfield Community Gardens. Provided in partnership with the Springfield-Greene County Library District’s Heirloom Seed Library, the Greene County MU Extension Office and Springfield Community Gardens. A Seeding a Healthy Life program. Registration starts April 30; call 417-862-0135.

"My Garden of a Thousand Bees" Friday, May 20, 6 p.m. for adults in the Library Station Frisco Room. Immerse yourself in the world of bees with a screening of this bee-utiful and surprising story, rated TV-G. Martin Dohrn, veteran wildlife cameraman and bee enthusiast, embarked on a challenge during the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020, filming all the bees he could find in his tiny urban garden in Bristol, England. By the end of the summer, he became bee obsessed and developed relationships with them. A #PlantWildflowers program.

Plant Swap, Saturday, May 21, 2 p.m. for adults in the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library upstairs meeting room. Grow your jungle! Bring one or more of your own houseplants, succulents, cactus plants, cuttings or garden seedlings to swap with your neighbors. Bring small containers or jars to carry your new plant pups home.

The programs in these series are possible through generous grants. The series Seeding a Healthy Life comes through the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. Programs under #PlantWildflowers and seeds are funded by the Tangled Bank Studios/PBS Nature #PlantWildflowers Initiative.
