Celebrate Black History through Theater and Storytimes with Us

We’re honoring Black History Month with African American Read-In storytimes and a special performance in the community of African Folk Tales. Be sure to bring the kids!

Don't miss this one-time special presentation by the Bright Star Touring Theatre. This lively touring theater will present “African Folk Tales” on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 4:30 p.m. for ages 4-10 at The Fairbanks, 1126 N. Broadway Ave.

From the desert lands of the Sahara to the plains of the Serengeti to Mount Kilimanjaro and beyond – join a variety of characters from a wide range of cultures in stories that celebrate the various folk tale traditions of the continent of Africa.

African music helps to set the stage for these energetic stories which include Anansi, porquoi tales and many facts and figures about this incredible continent. Sponsored by the Library Foundation.

Then through the month of February, bring your little ones to special Racing to Read Storytimes that focus on books by Black authors and illustrators.

The Celebrating Black Brilliance Storytimes are planned at library branches throughout the district. Most are for infants to age 6. See the schedule of storytimes that begin Wednesday, Feb. 1, on the program listings at thelibrary.org/kids, or see page 7 of the winter issue of Bookends, available at any library branch.

The programs are always free and open to all families.
