Bank Robbers, Ozarks Culture, a Storied County Lead History Series

March 18 launches a series of three spring programs revealing the unique – and sometimes lawless – nature of the Ozarks’ history and its people. These Saturday programs at the Republic Branch Library are free and open to the public.

Saturday, March 18, 10:30 a.m.: The Northfield Bank Robbery.  September 7, 1876, was a bad day for the James-Younger Gang. At the urging of gang member Clell Miller, Jesse and the boys traveled to Northfield, Minnesota, expecting to easily knock off a wealthy bank. Author and storyteller Tim Ritter recounts this wild tale with photographs and animated maps, showing what happened and how everything went wrong for the boys from Missouri.

Saturday, April 15, 10:30 a.m.: Living Ozarks: Ecology & Culture of a Natural Place. Ozarkers have a long history of nature writing, covering topics such as land use, sustainability and natural resources. Explore these topics and appreciate the natural Ozarks through selected readings from the anthology "Living Ozarks: The Ecology and Culture of a Natural Place." Presenters include Missouri State University’s James Baumlin. Books will be available for purchase.

Saturday, May 20, 10:30 a.m.: Christian County History. Join Wayne Glenn, Christian County history expert and "Old Record Collector," as he takes a look back at Christian County's 1859 founding and its early development through modern times.
