Marblehead Quarry

“The old rock quarry hole at Lindsey and Mill Streets, which in past years has proven one of the most dangerous spots in the city because of the deep water constantly standing in it, will soon be eliminated.

“The city council has authorized the purchase of lots 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 in Tedrick’s addition, which compromises the old quarry, to be used as a dumping ground for city refuse.

“The hole is located east of the United Iron works and as much as 40 feet of water has been in the quarry during the summer months.

“Last summer one person was drowned in the hole and others are reported to have been drowned there in former years.”

Using the large Springfield additions map available in the Local History and Genealogy department at the Library Center, the property location was confirmed at the northwest corner of the intersection of National and what would become Trafficway. The quarry was later filled in to create The Commons at Jordan Valley and Sister Cities Plaza. The image at right is thought to be of the quarry and is part of the Library's postcard collection.
