Travel the Federal Road and Civil War Sites Through the Ozarks
History and genealogy hobbyists will gain new perspectives about an historical road across the South and the bitter clashes that split the Ozarks during the Civil War at two library programs July 19 and 20.
Did your ancestors emigrate west in the pre-Civil War era? Established in 1805, the Federal Road provided a route across the Creek Nation, now Georgia and Alabama, for postal workers, military, migrants and pleasure travelers.
Learn about it in "Augusta to Mobile, 1803-85: The Federal Road" by Gay Solomon during Exploring Genealogy at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, in the Library Center auditorium. Participants will learn to use first-person narratives, land plats and territorial papers to understand conditions encountered by those who traveled or lived along this trail. At 4 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at the Strafford Branch Library, Local History Associate Michael Price will discuss the Civil War in the Ozarks, from large-scale battles like Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge to small but bitter clashes with guerillas. For detrails call 417-736-9233.
