Cabbage Patch Kids Mania

“A crowd of shoppers scurries after Cabbage Patch Kids this morning at Circus World in Battlefield Mall. The toy store received a shipment of 25 of the popular dolls along with 30 Glow Worms and 20 Care Bears, salesman Jim Halopter said. An estimated 100 people, some of whom had been waiting in line for a couple of hours, were on hand when the store opened, Halopter said, and all the dolls sold in a matter of minutes. Halopter said buyers had to sign up for the dolls as they entered and the selling was fairly orderly in spite of the crowd. The store probably will get no more Cabbage Patch Kids until March, Halopter said, adding that he didn’t know when more of the other dolls might arrive.”

An article on page four of this issue reports that the makers of Cabbage Patch Dolls were charged with false advertising by the Nassau County (NY) Office of Consumer Affairs. The commissioner complained that the company was over advertising the dolls while not supplying enough to meet demand. The image of customers at Circus World is part of From the Darkroom: Springfield's Historic Newspaper Photographs.
