Take the Winter Reading Challenge; Census Bureau is Hiring; Keep Up on Weather Closings with Emergency Hotline

Red heart and snowflakes logo image for the Springfield-Greene County Library District Winter Reading Challenge. If you love reading and you love a challenge, you’re going to love the Library’s Winter Reading Challenge for adults. It runs January through February 2020. It’s a nice change of pace from the Summer Reading Program; at a time when warm-weather pursuits don’t compete for our reading time.

Beginning Jan. 2, pick up a Winter Reading Challenge form at the checkout desk of any library branch or the Mobile Library. There are 15 reading “challenges” that may delight you, push you outside your reading “comfort zone,” or introduce you to your new, favorite genre or author. The libraries can also provide a suggested reading list for each of the 15 categories to help you get started.

Complete at least five of the 15 challenges, turn in your completed challenge form to your library branch and receive a prize for being a Winter Reading Master! You don’t get an extra prize for being an overachiever, but you can brag about it to your friendly librarian.

The 15 categories: Listen to a book; teaches you something new, graphic novel or comic book; first in a series; takes place in another time or place; recommended by a celebrity book club; by an author new to you; outside your comfort zone; under 200 pages; made into a movie; always meant to read; retelling of a story; set in an imaginary world; by an author of color; and in a winter setting.

Got a few extra hours on your hands? The Census Bureau is hiring census takers and office workers. The pay ranges from $12 to $23 per hour, with weekly pay, paid training and flexible scheduling.

It’s a prime opportunity for retirees, students and anyone looking for a second, part-time job. Interested applicants should apply through the www.2020census.gov/jobs website.

With winter upon us, be sure to keep the library’s emergency closing hotline nearby: 616-0620.

The library branch in your community will open late, at 10 a.m., and the Mobile Library will not run, if the corresponding school district is closed. If severe weather requires, the hotline number will indicate if the libraries are closed.

Vickie Hicks is community relations director for the Springfield-Greene County Library District. She can be reached at vickieh@thelibrary.org.
