Read Magazines Anytime, Anywhere for Free with Library's New Zinio Service

September 3, 2015 — Magazine readers are going to love the newest service from the Springfield-Greene County Libraries: Now you can read complete, digital versions of 120-plus magazines anytime, anywhere, on PCs, Macs and mobile devices. There are no holds, no checkout periods and no limits to the number of magazines you can download.

It’s one of the many benefits of owning a library card, and a perfect way to kick off National Library Card Signup Month.

The digital magazines are offered through Zinio for Libraries, a product from Recorded Books. To easily access the site, just go to thelibrary.org/digital and click on Zinio for Libraries. From there you can browse the library’s collection of popular titles ranging from Better Homes & Gardens to Car and Driver to Cosmopolitan to Newsweek and National Geographic.

From that site you can set up a free, personal account using your library card number, a chosen login and password. If you’ve already set up an account with the online video service IndieFlix through the library, you must use that same login and password.

Once you create an account and select the magazine you want to read – remember – no limits – you can read complete editions of that magazine as well as back issues.

Other special features:

  • Zinio’s technology digitally recreates a magazine page for page, including full-color pictures and intuitive navigation
  • Some magazines such as National Geographic also have interactive elements including audio and video that you can use by clicking on their links.
  • Browse the library's collection of titles one at a time, search for your favorite magazines by title or use the convenient category feature to find new magazines that match your interests.
  • You can also download magazines to your mobile device for offline reading. Mobile apps are available for iPad, iPhone, Kindle Fire and Android.

Book, music and movie lovers already know the cost savings of using the library. Magazine readers, who can pay $10-$15 for a single yearly subscription, will quickly see big savings reading online through Zinio.
