Their roots are in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, and they are 50 million strong in the United States. They are Latino Americans, and the library is honoring their influence and culture with a series of free events.
All events are in the Library Center auditorium.
- Groupo Latinoamericano Dance Troupe – This audience favorite will perform at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, for all ages. The troupe will perform authentic dances from Mexico, Central and South America.
- "Cesar Chavez" film screening – At 6 p.m. Nov. 16, watch the struggle and determination of civil rights activist and labor organizer Cesar Chavez in this 2014 biopic "Cesar Chavez," rated PG-13.
- Latino Americans: 500 Years of History - From 6-8 p.m. Nov. 17, watch “Episode 1: Foreigners in their Own Land (1565-1880)" from the PBS documentary series "Latino Americans." The episode explores the period from 1565-1880, as the first Spanish explorers enter North America, the U.S. expands into Southwest territories that had been home to Native Americans and English and Spanish colonies, and as the Mexican-American War strips Mexico of half its territories by 1848.
After the screening, Dr. Indira Palacios-Valladares, assistant professor of political science at Missouri State University, will lead a discussion about the impact of colonization.
The programs are provided in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council and the Missouri Immigrant & Refugee Advocates, and funded through the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.
